What fruit are we growing? Looks like kumquat...?

We moved recently into a rental and the owner didn't know what this one tree was. It just started fruiting and the fruit looks like kumquat (little yellow/orange pear looking fruits), but it isn't. The leaves of the tree look something like a cross between avocado and peach foliage. The fruit can't be kumquat because instead of a bunch of little seeds, there's just one big brown seed in the middle. Any ideas? Don't want to taste it in case it's not safe for human consumption!
