Why is a book of mythical creatures taken seriously?

It's downright Tolkienesque, isn't it? The only difference is that Iluvatar is actually a pretty just and likable god, unlike Yahweh. Oh, and the races of men, elves, dwarves and hobbits didn't arise out of hugely gross incest parties. That's a pretty big advantage. The Silmarillion > the Bible.
