Can we harvest the energy that plants collect through foliage?

Why don't we have batteries with plants growing out of them, that collect sunlight and grow? If we did have something like this, the amount of energy collected would increase over time because the foliage would collect more and more light the bigger it grows. It would also theoretically release oxygen just like any plant.
