How to handle drawing a forest, all at once or one leaf at a time?

I try to capture how light and shadow play overall with tone and shading when drawing foliage. Then pick a few spots to add some detailed leaves, petals, stalks and limbs. It's just too much to try and faithfully recreate every leaf or blade of grass.
